Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin treatment that removes the top layers of the skin (stratum corneum) by sand blasting them with crystals (usually aluminium oxide) or gentle abrasion with suction.

By exfoliating the skin, it accelerates the formation of smoother, brighter skin. It also clears pores and helps to reduce blackheads and acne breakouts if done regularly. Apart from surface exfoliation, microdermabrasion also promotes the production of new cells by stimulating collagen, which helps to bring about more youthful looking skin.

Since its introduction, microdermabrasion has been tremendously popular as a beauty quick fix. Its fast, painless and theres no downtime, which means you can go right back to what you were doing after your treatment.

Compared to conventional laser treatments and skin peels which are relatively more painful with substantial downtime, microdermabrasion makes a quicker and more convenient answer to smoother, clearer skin. Plus it is also much more affordable than laser treatments and skin peels.

Coming to the topic of cost, though microdermabrasion may be more affordable than lasers and peels, it is still not considered cheap. Thats because to see good results in the long run, microdermabrasion has to be done regularly, often every 3-4 weeks. If assuming you pay $50 for 1 session at a beauty salon, that comes up to $500 for 10 sessions. However if you were to visit a more high-end beauty salon or a dermatologist clinic, be prepared to fork out at least $80-$100 per session, which means about $1,000 for 10 sessions. If your problem is wrinkles or scars (which may take longer to see visible results), you may even need to pay for extra sessions.

So we come back to the question:the more expensive the microdermabrasion the better?

We say:No

The reason is simple. The treatment procedure is the same. The difference lies in who does it for you. A beautician at an average salon, a beauty specialist at a chi-chi beauty salon or a nurse at a dermatologist clinic (truth is it is usually not the dermatologist who performs microdermabrasion but the nurses).
